Breath, Grief & Letting Go: The Wisdom of the Metal Element
There is something about fall that naturally turns us inward.
The light changes. The air becomes a little cooler. Nature begins releasing what it no longer needs. And whether we realize it or not, many of us feel that shift too.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, autumn is associated with the Metal element, and Metal is connected with the Lungs and Large Intestine. One receives. The other releases.
Think about the breath.
We inhale. We receive.
We exhale. We let go.
We cannot keep inhaling forever. There has to be a release before there can be space for something new.
Grief Belongs Here Too
In TCM, the emotion associated with the Metal element is grief.
I love this teaching because it doesn't necessarily treat grief as something that needs to be fixed. Grief is part of being human. We grieve people, but we also grieve relationships, places, identities, dreams, chapters of our lives, and versions of ourselves we've outgrown.
Sometimes we don't even realize we're grieving.
Autumn reminds us that letting go doesn't mean something wasn't important.
The trees don't release their leaves because the leaves meant nothing.
They release them because their season is complete.
The Practice of Discernment
Metal isn't only about letting go. It's also associated with discernment and value.
Before we release, we get to ask:
What still matters?
What deserves my energy?
What am I carrying simply because I've become accustomed to carrying it?
Maybe letting go isn't about getting rid of everything that feels uncomfortable. Maybe it's about becoming clearer about what belongs in the life we're creating now.
Come Back to Your Breath
You don't need an elaborate ritual.
Sit somewhere quiet.
Feel your inhale arrive without forcing it.
Then notice the exhale.
Let it finish.
Pause for just a moment in the space that follows.
And ask yourself:
What am I ready to stop carrying?
You don't even need an answer.
Sometimes creating the space for the question is enough.
This is one of the quiet lessons of autumn: receiving and releasing are not opposites. They are parts of the same cycle.
Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Keep what matters.
Let the rest become compost for whatever comes next.
